First Indian Language Technology Meet was held in Department of IT (MCIT) for two days (Aug. 10-11, 1999) comprising of eight sessions. An exhibition of Indian Language Technologies was also organized. More than 125 participants from government, Academia, users, Developers etc. contributed their expert opinions for the cause of Indian Languages. The Indian Language Technologies developed under TDIL and in the private sector for word demonstrative.

To disseminate the Indian Language Technologies developed under TDIL Programme and to enhance interaction among the Indian Language Technology Developers for pipelining the research efforts and work collaboratively, to promote standardization and identify future research areas in view of the impact of information technology revolution on the society at large.

The panel session was chaired by Dr. S.Ramani, NCST. Other panelists were Dewang Mehta, NASSCOM, Dr. Rajeev Sangal, Satyam Computers(currently IIIT, Hyderabad), Prof. K.J. Mahale, Asmitai Pratisthan & Sh. Vinay Dharamadhikari, Senior Director, DOE (now MIT). 

Brain storming discussions converged on the following:
The content creation in Indian Languages needs to be promoted.
Public domain approach.
Internet and e-commerce to be promoted in Indian Languages.
Efforts in localization, ensuring regular upgrades.
Enforce maintaining standards (ISCII/Unicode) uniformly across the applications including web.
Proprietary font developers to provide converters for ISCII/Unicode.
Consolidation of research efforts.
Machine-aided Translation systems to be developed for all pairs of languages.
The scientific terminology for Information Technology to be developed and made available in the public domain.
Effective use of Internet for propagating the Indian Culture besides the Indian languages.
Indian Languages support to be ensured in the e-governance application development.
IT Skill Development for Indian Language Community.

The ILT Meet'99 concluded with optimism of rapid increase in PC penetration, multi-modal (multi-lingual, multi-media) content creation, and a variety of knowledge based business in Indian languages. The ILT Meet' 99 ended soon after the solar eclipse on August 11, 1999 with the feeling of "Tamaso ma jyotirgamay".
